What Is the .30 Whitetail?
The .30 Whitetail is a .30 caliber bottleneck cartridge with a 1.400″ case length, designed to comply with Illinois deer hunting regulations while delivering superior ballistic performance.
Formed from 6mm BR brass that’s necked up to .30 caliber and shortened to meet legal requirements, the cartridge features a 40-degree fire-formed shoulder to increase usable case capacity.
In practical terms, it’s essentially a shortened .30 BRA, optimized for legal use and real-world hunting performance.

Designed to Outperform Other Illinois-Legal Options
Compared to popular cartridges like the 350 Legend and 450 Bushmaster, the .30 Whitetail offers several key advantages:
- Flatter trajectory
- Higher retained energy at distance
- Reduced recoil
- Improved downrange efficiency
While larger straight-wall cartridges may start with higher muzzle energy, they tend to lose velocity quickly due to lower ballistic coefficients. The .30 Whitetail maintains velocity and energy more efficiently—and even overtakes the 450 Bushmaster in delivered energy at roughly 125 yards.
Accuracy & Terminal Performance
The cartridge was designed with both hunters and precision shooters in mind.
Rifles chambered in .30 Whitetail are capable of MOA accuracy out to 500 yards, providing precision well beyond the practical range of many Illinois-legal deer cartridges.
When paired with bullets such as the 120-grain Barnes TAC-TX, the cartridge delivers:
- Deep penetration
- Large wound cavities
- Reliable exit wounds
The result is devastating terminal performance, placed exactly where intended, at distances beyond the capability of many commonly used alternative.
